What is EGL?

EGL is a Quake2 engine created and maintained by me, Echon, that I started a few years ago. I began with the simple intent to educate myself on game development. My main goal is to modernize the engine as much as possible without breaking compatibility with existing community modifications. As a side goal I also try to make the engine developer friendly, for people looking to create new games and/or projects based off of a Quake2 engine. Things like Quake3 map support, shader support, scriptable GUIs (90% done), a Client-Game module, organized code-base, and eventually scripted effects make it easier for new developers. For a bigger semi-annually updated list of EGL's features, visit the Features page on the EGL homepage.

Day Nine:

Thanks to pallokallo I have brand new better looking ejecting brass for the machinegun, chaingun, shotgun, and super shotgun. Here's a couple screenshots:

I've also tweaked dozens of other particle effects to be less obstructive and faster. Even after optimizing they look better thanks to better (more realistic) organization of how the particles are spawned. There will be a small update, v0.3.2, coming either tonight or tomorrow.

Day Four:

It took a bit longer than expected to get EGL anticheat compatible last night, then I fell asleep. Release is coming early today.

EDIT: It is released! Check out the downloads page for more information on EGL v0.3.1!

Day Three:

EGL release coming tonight.

Day Two:

Hey hey. Added a few new pages, you can see them above. I should also mention that there's a release of EGL coming very soon. This will primarily be a bugfix and performance release. I will be doing a small test tonight with someone, then releasing if no oddities are found.

Day One:

Here's some screenshots showing off how EGL can make your Quake II deathmatch experience easier on the eyes. You can see the retexture addon (in development) and map effects (like the light coronas) coming in the next update:

There is a new release coming of EGL during this QExpo aimed at rubbing out a few bugs, so sit tight for now. Until it's completed, check out the homepage, where you can read about it, view screenshots, or even download it and some addons.
